Tailoring

The Darjeeling Jesuits of North Bengal in 90’s drew its attention to support the poor and marginalized young girls through tailoring program so as they could engage them in sustainable employment. Later in 2013 Human Life Development & Research Centre (HLDRC) took the ownership and went ahead supporting the unemployed young girls to become financially self-reliant by imparting them crucial knowledge with the help of training on tailoring at a subsidized fee. Tailoring training is operated in two units; one is located in Matigara (Maitri Bhawan) and the other is located in Ramjhora T.G in Dooars region. This exciting course is an opportunity to immerse the young girls in the world of bespoke tailoring. This tailoring apprentice takes one year to perfect their craft. The duration of training is six days in a week and having three hours a day. The expert tutor Mrs. Sandhya Rani Paul with the help of demonstrations and practical activities enables young girls to elevate their basic sewing skills, learn techniques in cutting ,designing, hand stitching, seam and many more. The trainer makes the girls expert in creating a finished garment from the beginning to the end.

The economically underprivileged and marginalized girls through tailoring program are engaged in professionalism, tailoring has become the source and backbone of their livelihood. Many become micro entrepreneurs in tailoring. The young girls have become financially independent and supporting their family.
